Frequently asked questions
What is Baristina?
Baristina is an espresso machine designed to make genuinely great espresso as simple as possible — no barista knowledge or skills required.
The distinctive swipe of the handle is at the heart of Baristina. Add your coffee beans and swipe the handle. The machine automatically grinds the beans, compresses the ground coffee evenly and prepares your coffee. One movement. Done. Baristina makes both espresso and lungo. You can also adjust the water volume for either drink: hold the espresso or lungo button for five seconds, then press the blinking button when your preferred amount is reached. Whether you prefer a short, intense shot or a longer, smoother cup, the choice is yours.
Baristina combines a ceramic coffee grinder, automatic compression of the ground coffee, PID temperature control and a flow meter. It brings 70 years of Philips coffee expertise to a compact machine that fits on any kitchen counter and needs only a swipe of the handle.
Is Baristina easy to use?
Yes. Baristina was designed so that anyone can make genuinely great espresso or lungo without barista knowledge or previous experience.
Choose your drink and swipe the handle. This starts grinding directly into the portafilter. The handle then returns automatically, and the machine compresses the ground coffee evenly and prepares your drink. Grind, compress, prepare. One movement. Done.
There are no menus to navigate, grind settings to configure or techniques to master. The distinctive swipe of the handle is the Baristina experience. Whether it is your first coffee or your thousandth, making great espresso feels effortless every time.
What is the difference between Baristina and a capsule coffee machine?
Capsule machines are popular for one reason: simplicity. Insert a capsule, press a button and your coffee is ready. Baristina offers the same simplicity — swipe the handle and enjoy your espresso — without the compromises of capsules.
Better coffee. Baristina freshly grinds whole coffee beans for every cup. Freshly ground beans deliver significantly more aroma and flavour than pre-ground coffee in a capsule. You can taste the difference in every cup.
Lower cost per cup. Whole coffee beans cost considerably less per cup than capsules. The savings add up over time, and you are free to choose any beans you like, from any brand or coffee roaster.
Better for the planet. Capsule machines create a plastic or aluminium capsule after every coffee. Baristina uses whole beans and ejects the used coffee grounds as a dry coffee puck that is ideal for composting. No single-use capsule waste.
And it makes you feel like a barista. The distinctive swipe of the handle, the real portafilter and the freshly ground beans turn your morning coffee into a moment to enjoy, not just another routine.
What is the difference between Baristina and a fully automatic espresso machine?
Fully automatic espresso machines are convenient: add coffee beans, press a button and the coffee comes out.
Baristina is built around a different idea: a simplified espresso system that puts you at the centre of the experience. The distinctive swipe of the handle sets it apart. Instead of pressing a button and stepping back, you swipe the handle to start grinding, compressing the ground coffee and preparing espresso in one movement. This small moment of participation makes every espresso feel like yours, rather than something the machine simply produces.
The coffee quality supports the experience. Baristina uses a real portafilter and a direct espresso preparation path. Together with the ceramic coffee grinder, automatic compression of the ground coffee, PID temperature control and flow meter, it delivers genuinely great espresso — not just convenient coffee.
What is the difference between Baristina and a semi-automatic espresso machine?
Semi-automatic machines use a portafilter, and so does Baristina. But the comparison ends there.
With a semi-automatic machine, you grind the coffee beans separately, measure the dose, compress the ground coffee by hand and control the extraction yourself. Consistent results take practice, the right equipment and a good understanding of espresso preparation. The process is not simple, and results can vary.
Baristina automates every step that a semi-automatic machine leaves to you. The distinctive swipe of the handle starts grinding directly into the portafilter, the machine automatically creates a perfectly level coffee puck, and PID temperature control and the flow meter manage extraction automatically. You get the authentic portafilter experience without needing barista skills — with consistent results every time.
I've seen some older Baristina listings online with low review scores — should I be concerned?
This is a fair question, and worth addressing directly.
Earlier production batches of the Baristina BAR300 experienced performance issues over time, which are reflected in a number of older reviews online. Philips took this feedback seriously, identified the root cause, and improved the product.
If you are purchasing directly from the Philips shop, you can be confident you are receiving the most recent and improved version of Baristina.
If you are purchasing through an external retailer or Amazon, updated machine are listed as the BAR305 and can be identified by the ""2026 edition"" sticker on the product listing. These machines are not affected by the issues found in earlier stock.
Whichever channel you choose, your Baristina comes with a 2-year Philips guarantee.
